About this course

Developing Reliable Tracking Indications A tracking indication is an important communication behaviour, allowing the dog to identify and communicate the location of an article encountered during a track. However, a reliable indication involves more than simply teaching a dog to stop or lie down when they find an object. The Enigma Canine Tracking Indication course explores how to develop indication behaviours through structured exercises, establishing clear expectations before introducing the additional demands of tracking. Throughout this course, you will explore: * Developing a clear indication behaviour. * Building understanding and consistency through progressive exercises. * Establishing clear criteria for the indication. * Introducing articles into indication training. * Developing independence and reducing unnecessary handler influence. * Incorporating indications into tracking exercises. * Recognising and addressing difficulties as training progresses. The emphasis is on developing the indication as an individual skill before combining it with tracking. By separating these elements during the early stages, instructors can help dogs understand what is expected when they encounter an article without introducing unnecessary complexity. As training progresses, the indication can be incorporated into tracking exercises, allowing the dog to develop the ability to maintain their tracking behaviour while recognising and communicating the location of relevant articles. This specialist course provides instructors with a structured approach to developing tracking indications and supporting effective communication between dog and handler.

Meet your Instructor

I’m Alexandra Butler, founder of Enigma Canine, with almost 20 years of experience in canine scent work, including operational and recreational training. My background in policing and extensive experience across Mantrailing, Tracking and Scent Detection have shaped the way I approach training and education. I believe effective scent work training begins with understanding the dog and the chemical information available to them. Rather than simply teaching a collection of exercises, my focus is on helping instructors understand why we train in particular ways, how dogs learn and how to analyse the information each training session provides. Through Enigma Canine, I have developed a comprehensive range of instructor courses designed to bring together scientific understanding and practical application. My aim is to give instructors the knowledge and skills to make informed training decisions, develop their own understanding and deliver effective scent work training to their clients.
